Felix and Zelda have traveled across Poland trying to find somewhere safe during Hitler’s Nazi reign the Holocaust. When Felix first found Zelda outside a burning house with a huge bruise on her head Felix expected her to be a Jew. Until he saw her Locket. Her mother and father had given Zelda a silver locket with a photo of them inside. Her father was wearing Nazi uniform.  When Zelda saw what the Nazi’s were doing to the Jews. Zelda, a stubborn 6 year old, saw the locket as a symbol of hate. But Felix realised that the locket would keep Zelda safe. But she still had a burning hate her parents being Nazi’s she refused to wear it. But when Dov an orphan talked about his family Zelda drew a picture. A picture of her, her Mummy and Daddy dancing with chickens. She told Felix that even though her parents were Nazi’s they still loved her and she loved them. Then she put the locket back on.

The morning when Felix (Wilhelm) woke up Genia and Zelda( Violetta) wished him a happy birthday. His fake I.D card said it was his birthday. Genia and Zelda went into town to buy him a birthday present with Mr Krol ( he too was hiding a jew boy). But Zelda left her locket. Felix ran after them to give the locket to Zelda to keep her safe. But he reached the town square. As the wind blew and their bodies swayed and turned to face him. All Felix felt was hate. And a burning sensation to kill. Destroy the Nazi’s who had destroyed the ones he loved. In Hitler Youth uniform grenades taped to his body. He went to their camp on a suicide mission. But his friend Amon pulled him aside and gave him his birthday present. A gold locket. Zelda’s drawing of a girl and boy. F above the boys head and Z above the girls head.  Felix’s wish to kill stopped and felt a moment of love.

The locket that has raced around the Poland  symbolised the love of her parents.The hate she once felt for them. And the moment she put it back on when she forgave them. And the safety Felix wanted her to have. Zelda then gave Felix a locket after her death. One that held the love she had for him. The love she could have for a brother. The hate he had for the Nazi’s who had killed her. The safety he wanted her to have.
